2020/2021 A Year in Review

The EHB was incorporated in September 2020 in the middle of the Covid-19 global pandemic. Hence, the purpose of EHB could not be more important at a time like the presence in this community that is disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

  • We organized COVID response information session in Tigrinya in March 2020 in collaboration with King County Public Health and Seattle City Office of Immigrants and Refugees Affairs (OIRA), in which 39 people attended.
  • Moreover, we have been providing COVID-19 updates monthly since October 2020 in collaboration with a group called “Tigrinya Speakers Series,” where 33 people attended on average.
  • We translated the most current information on Covid-19 and Vaccine rollout including frequently asked questions, making information available in Tigrinya on the King County website.
  •  We have helped about 100 eligible people to sign up for vaccines via phone call and/or creating a google form translated into Tigrinya in order to sign participants up at pop-up clinics, and our member also volunteered on these sites. We have created videos on COVID-19 vaccine and shared them on our Facebook page, where more than 1200 people were reached and 223 engagements met within 28 days.
  •  We organized a virtual information session with a panel of health professionals in Tigrinya about COVID-19 and Vaccines in April 2021, in which 40 people attended. We prepared discussion questions as well as allowed attendants to ask questions as a way to alleviate vaccine hesitancy. We also recorded these sessions, out of which we created short videos and shared them on our social media platforms.
  •  We volunteered as presenters on COVID-19 and Vaccines to four ELL classes with Literacy source. This allowed students, that were new immigrants from different countries of origin, to ask questions concerning the topic.
  •  We created a coalition with different interest groups and organizations in the Eritrean community. For example, we partnered with the Eritrean Dance Group, Tigrinya Speakers Series and Back-to-School BBQ planning committee in fighting vaccine hesitancy, advocacy, as well as securing a pop-up clinic in collaboration with the City of Seattle at a picnic on August 15, 2021. We worked together with our partners in planning the event. This included tabling, where facemasks, hand sanitizers and pamphlets were distributed.  Moreover, we conducted a survey about Covid-19 vaccines; resulting in more than 120 participants completing these surveys.
  •  By use of  google form , a hotline was created through which we helped over 200 people sign up and get vaccinated at different vaccination pop-up clinics in collaboration with Seattle City Fire Department and Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA). The COVID hotline was operated by our volunteers on Mondays and Fridays between 4pm-7pm (Tigrinya), Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:00pm-3:00pm (Arabic and Tigrinya).
  •  We distributed items of masks and hand sanitizer in collaboration with East African
Community Services (EACS). Similarly, we distributed facemasks and pamphlets at an event celebrating the Eritrean Independence Day in May 2021.
